Seeing Red (La sangre en el ojo), dir. Toia Bonino, Argentina 2020, 66 min., Spanish with English subtitles
Toia Bonino’s follow-up to her debut feature
Orione (2017) opens with footage of a man, Leo, floating across a sanguine swimming pool. But where the Argentine filmmaker and artist’s first feature was primarily concerned with maternal grief, this second act – of what will become a trilogy – shifts the focus to masculine repression as Leo deals with the death of his brother Ale in the only way he knows how: through violent revenge fantasies that consume his waking moments.
Through home movies, smartphone footage and a striking visual formalism, Seeing Red subverts the archetypes of crime movies and revenge tragedies to present a multi-layered portrayal of the indelible psychological scars caused by toxic masculinity and dehumanising prison systems.
This screening is a UK Premiere and is followed by an online Q&A with director Toia Bonino, hosted by film programmer and podcaster Mark Donaldson.
