New Shorts: Animation Variety Show
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Family Tape, dir. Wei-Chia Wu, Taiwan 2021, 7 min.

Our annual animation selection continues to colour outside the lines. These animations are bold, political, hilarious and irreverent miniatures of the modern condition, drawing lines between agency, purpose and dissidence. The films attest to the ability of animation to depict the abstract and complex human experience in fascinating new ways. These characters may only exist on paper, but their emotions, predicaments and sentiments are entirely #relatable.

The depiction of a heart murmur, an exploration of a parent’s belongings, a day in the life of a graffiti artist, an animator’s experience of racism and more are explored in this curated selection of films, from Taiwan to Jordan to Romania. Curated by Qila Gil, these films are all in the running to win Best International Short at LSFF 2022.
