I Walked With A Zombie, dir. Jacques Tourneur, USA 1943, 69 min., English, PG

‘The first time I watched I Walked With a Zombie, I heard the voodoo drums for days afterwards. The carnal beats led a white lady, Jessica Holland, for a forever comatose journey. Perhaps Memoria is I Walked With a Zombie Part II, a continuation of Jessica’s walk.’

Directed by Jacques Tourneur (Out of the Past / Build My Gallows High, Cat People), this mesmerizingly rich and strange 1940s horror transplants Jane Eyre to the (fictional) Caribbean island of Saint Sebastian, where a nurse resorts to voodoo as she tries to cure the ailing wife of the island’s plantation owner – with whom she’s fallen in love.

I Walked With a Zombie is one of three choices by Apichatpong Weerasethakul as part of his 3+3 season celebrating the release of his new work Memoria.
