In Focus: Sofia Bohdanowicz
Institute of Contemporary Arts

The playfully intelligent and evocative films of singular Canadian filmmaker Sofia Bohdanowicz often unfold like off-beat detective stories, with Bohdanowicz's own family history the mystery to be investigated and explored.

Working as a director, writer, cinematographer, editor, and producer, often in collaboration with actor Deragh Campbell, Bohdanowicz has made four acclaimed features and ten short films. At the centre of this extensive body of work sits an invigoratingly independent and unconventional film series centred upon a curious young woman named Audrey Benac, Bohdanowicz's on-screen alter-ego, embodied by frequent collaborator Deragh Campbell.

Across three features and two shorts to date, Audrey Benac takes on the role of archival detective, digging through the fragments and layers of her own and Bohdanowicz's family history, creating an intriguing interplay between documentary and fiction that feels constantly in flux.

We are delighted to present a selection of Sofia Bohdanowicz's work at the ICA, including the entirety of the Audrey Benac series, and to welcome Sofia Bohdanowicz for an in-person Q&A following the UK Premiere of A Woman Escapes on Thursday 1 February.
