Mandibles (Mandibules), dir. Quentin Dupieux, France 2020, 77 min., French with English subtitles

Stealing a bashed-up Mercedes so they can deliver a mysterious briefcase to an unknown recipient, dim-witted small-time criminals Jean-Gab (David Marsais) and Manu (Grégoire Ludig) suddenly notice a peculiar buzzing noise coming from the boot. When they open it to find a colossal fly trapped inside, the pair ditch their current mission – and in a bid to make their fortune, train the fly to carry out robberies on their behalf.

The latest feature from Quentin ‘Mr Oizo’ Dupieux is perhaps his daftest and most delightful yet: a surreal road movie about friendship, dreams, disasters and one ridiculously massive insect. Winning performances from Marsais and Ludig, a long-established comedy duo in their native France, amplify the absurdity – but the real star is the fly.
