"Capturing moments of transition and imbalance, that’s what interests me."
— Jean-François Stévenin

An erratic journey to the end of the night, Double Messieurs begins with the encounter between two school friends now in their middle age. Deciding to play a prank on an estranged member of their childhood gang in a desperate grasp at fading youth, the pair travel to their erstwhile friend’s home only to end up ‘accidentally’ kidnapping his wife (Carole Bouquet). Obliquely drawing on the conventions of the crime film, this nighttime odyssey is relayed by Stévenin through abortive gestures, enigmatic glances, and faux raccords. Ending in existential desolation on a snowy mountain range, Double Messieurs takes Stévenin’s singularly free-form style to new heights. As he put it, the actors’ "movements in relation to each other and to the camera should be enough, for me, to tell the story of the film. The text is really just extra."

This is the first time Double Messieurs has screened in the UK since the 1987 Edinburgh International Film Festival.
