The first solo feature from Canadian director Andrea Bussmann, Faust (Fausto) (2018) is an enigmatic portrait of Mexico’s Oaxacan coast and its inhabitants. Taking the legend of Faust as its starting point, this ethnographic study interweaves Goethe’s narrative with local myths and stories to consider the impact of colonialism on the region.

Shot on grainy, amber-like Super 8, Lina Rodriguez’s elusive and evocative before my eyes (ante mis ojos) (also 2018) offers a fragmentary glimpse of Colombia’s mythic Lake Guatavita, long considered the inspiration for the legend of El Dorado.
