PREVIEW Três Realizadoras Portuguesas + Q&A
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Três Realizadoras Portuguesas, dirs. Mariana Gaivão, Leonor Teles & Sofia Bost, Portugal 2021, 64 min., Portuguese with English subtitles

This compilation brings together three unrelated short films by three young Portuguese filmmakers, each of which has recently played to acclaim at major European film festivals – and each of which will be receiving their UK premiere at the ICA.

Sofia Bost’s Party Day (Dia de Festa) follows a mother preparing a birthday party for her seven-year-old daughter – until a phone call from her own mother causes upset and anguish. Mariana Galvão’s Ruby portrays the in-between life of a young girl born to British parents but living in rural Portugal, a stranger in two lands whose best friend is preparing to return to England. And in Dogs Barking at Birds (Cães que ladram aos pássaros), Leonor Teles – who won the Golden Bear for Best Short at the 2016 Berlinale – trails Vincente, a young man forced from his home city of Porto by gentrification. A captivating trilogy.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Sofia Bost and Mariana Gaivão

Três Realizadoras Portuguesas is screening as part of Collective Mobilisation, a survey of work from contemporary Portuguese cinema co-presented by the ICA, TERRATREME and Uma Pedra no Sapato.
