Last Movies

Kurt Cobain enjoyed a banana-based dessert at the Cactus restaurant in Seattle, before asking owner Brett Chatalas for that evening’s movie listings. He and his friends picked Jane Campion’s The Piano. Cobain was last seen later that night, briefly, at Linda’s Tavern.

For this Valentine’s Day special of the ongoing Last Movies series, we present The Piano, the extraordinary film by Jane Campion that Kurt Cobain saw last.

Following the film Elena Gorfinkel will join Stanley Schtinter in conversation on art and commerce, love and force, the death of Kurt Cobain and the ambiguous feminisms of Jane Campion.
Elena Gorfinkel is a film scholar and critic based in London. Her research concerns marginal and independent cinemas, including adult, experimental and underground film, particularly from the 1960s to the present. She is Reader in Film Studies at King’s College London.

Stanley Schtinter has been described as an ‘artist’ by the Daily Mail, as an ‘exorcist’ by the Daily Star. Recent projects include The Lock-In, a 96-hour film consisting solely of indoor pub footage from the British soap opera Eastenders, and Important Books (or, Manifestos Read by Children).
