The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Hour of Liberation has Arrived, dir. Heiny Srour, Lebanon, France 1974, 62 min.

Years before the West could catch up, the short-haired socialist feminist insurgents of the Dhofar Rebellion in Oman fought colonial patriarchy from their base in the ‘liberated area’. Filmmaker Heiny Srour, who was trained in sociology and anthropology, began the documentary in 1971; the film was screened at Cannes upon completion in 1974. A beautiful and important document defying the circularity of historical determinism and colonialism.
