Still from Pass the Mic (2026) by Liz Johnson Artur.
Book tickets
Join us for an evening of short films and music celebrating Liz Johnson Artur’s new video work Pass the Mic, alongside the artist’s recent book I Will Keep You in Good Company, published by SPBH Editions/MACK.
The programme centres on Pass the Mic, a film that documents the evolution of early grime and traces the genre’s formative sites across London, from Deja Vu FM to Rhythm Division. Drawing on photographs and video footage captured by Johnson Artur in the early 2000s, the work moves from the intimate, DIY spaces of pirate radio stations in Newham to the dance floors of Hackney and Leyton, offering a vivid portrait of a defining moment in the city’s musical history.
The screening will be accompanied by a selection of short films exploring Black diaspora communities and their influence on London’s musical culture. Together, these works trace the development of UK sound system culture and consider the role of film and photography in documenting the people, spaces and movements that have shaped it.
Following the screening, the event will continue in the Upper Bar with a live performance by Elheist, responding to Johnson Artur’s short film.
This event is curated in collaboration with MACK Cinema Club.
