Join SMUT to celebrate the release of Ezekiel’s Somewhere between a doll and a dog with a book signing and intimate conversation with writer and editor Osman Ahmed, delving deeper into the stories and themes surrounding the artist’s latest monograph.
Somewhere between a doll and a dog is an unflinching, confessional, and diaristic archive of transness. Shot across the UK, Europe, the USA and the Philippines, the book positions transness as a fluid state that transcends borders, binaries and Western frameworks. As a first-generation immigrant, the project saw Ezekiel return to their country of birth after ten years, to reconnect with pre-colonial attitudes towards gender, where fluidity has long been part of the culture and mythology.
The three-year visual diary blends diary fragments, archival family portraits, and ephemera alongside fleeting sexual encounters, moments in hyper-masculine spaces and tender images of trans friends and lovers to articulate a language for the unfiltered textures of trans and queer life.

Bios
Ezekiel is a multidisciplinary artist whose work engages with the intricacies and nuances of gender, sexuality, and identity through an intimately queer gaze. Working across photography, filmmaking, curation, and publishing, their practice is deeply informed by their transnational upbringing and experiences as a first-generation immigrant navigating tensions between Eastern and Western cultures. Through this lens, Ezekiel’s work critically examines the politics of modern representation and colonial frameworks, challenging a predominantly white, heteronormative visual culture.
Osman Ahmed is a writer, editor and creative consultant who has worked with leading global brands and major publications for over fifteen years. The former Fashion Features Director at i-D, she is now a contributing editor at British Vogue and the creator of Private Parts, a weekly newsletter exploring art, style, identity and subculture.
