Two people kiss against a London sunset of tall concrete buildings and spires
Stud Life, dir. Campbell X, UK 2012, 91 min., English, 18

The next iteration of Out on Tuesday presents two films by award-winning writer-director Campbell X.

Stud Life, dir. Campbell X, UK 2012, 91 min.

JJ, a lesbian stud, and her best friend Seb, a gay wedding photographer, navigate the wild and wonderful world of their eccentric clients. Despite their search for love in the wrong places, JJ finds herself falling for the beautiful and mysterious Elle, forcing her to choose between her hot new lover and her long-time friend. Seb, on the other hand, rejects advances from the local drug dealer Smack Jack, who is deeply in love with him. As Seb’s online crush Manchester Joe proves to be disappointing and JJ’s relationship faces hurdles, JJ must decide whether to prioritise her friendship or her romantic interests.

Set in vibrant East London, Stud Life is a youthful lesbian romance that offers a glimpse into British urban life.

Still We Thrive, dir. Campbell X, UK 2022, 6 min., English

Archive footage of Black history from the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, the United States and the African continent is interwoven with Black actors speaking direct to camera as a dream-like meditation for liberation of Black souls. Amongst the spoken words feature the poems ‘A Negro Dreams of Rivers’ by Langston Hughes and ‘Yemoja’ by Olive Senior.

The film is a balm to Black people’s mental health now being assailed by images of violence and trauma.

The screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Campbell X and T’Nia Miller (Years and Years, The Haunting of Bly Manor), hosted by OG Courts.
