All Ages Workshop: Ambient Listening with Dr Michelle
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A sepia photo of Dr Michelle sitting by the window, looking out at a Cornwall street, with a laptop plugged into a small mixer.

Have you ever stopped to think about the power of music? For many of us, melody, rhythm, and lyrics have the power to evoke memories, sensations in the body, and process feelings – transporting us to another place.

Dr Michelle delivers an ambient listening workshop to reflect on the science behind why music can have a transformative effect on our emotions to make us feel relaxed, reduce stress and improve our overall wellbeing. After listening to music from the likes of Mary Lattimore, Ibukun Sunday and Duval Timothy, there will be a group discussion about our own experiences of listening. This workshop is open to people of all ages and invites an intergenerational approach to listening to and thinking about music.
Dr Michelle (BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD) is a highly accomplished music psychologist, DJ, radio host and writer. With over a decade of research and DJ experience, she is deeply committed to advancing the understanding of the transformative power music has for mental wellbeing. Her doctoral research involved developing and testing the first intervention exploring whether playing music in the mind can help people feel less anxious. This work has been presented in journal articles and international conferences, providing a unique contribution to the field of Music Psychology.
