Based on a novel by the same name written by Gu Hua, Hibiscus Town is a melodrama about the life and travails of a young woman who lives through the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution.
The 13th feature from Xie Jin, one of the most influential directors amongst China’s Third Generation of filmmakers, the film reached tremendous popularity domestically as well as reap recognition on the internationally. Considered as one of the best Chinese films about the cultural revolution, Hibiscus Town is a moving account of survival in the face of widespread social and political turmoil, told with clarity, compassion and insight.
The film, originally released by ICA Projects, will be showing from a rare 35mm print from the ICA Archive.
