The Driver, dir. Walter Hill, USA 1978, English, 15

An ace getaway driver puts pedal to metal with a hardboiled cop in hot pursuit…who’ll win out? A California classic, this edgy and exhilarating neo-noir from Walter Hill (The Warriors, 48 Hrs) offers thrills aplenty – and following a 4K restoration, it’s never looked better.

The Driver (Ryan O’Neal) is LA’s greatest getaway guy, the driver every robber wants behind the wheel. The Detective (Bruce Dern) is obsessed with capturing this elusive prize – and to lay a trap, he enlists The Player (Isabelle Adjani, in her first Hollywood role), a gambler whose knowledge may prove crucial. A flop on its original release but long since acknowledged as an inspiration by the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright, Hill’s second feature is more than just another chase picture – it’s a film where the chase is a way of life, winning is a means of survival and playing is the whole point of the game.
