The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, dir. Luis Buñuel, France / Italy / Spain 1972, 102 min., French & Spanish with English subtitles, 15

An unexpected but richly deserved winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Luis Buñuel’s surreal satire on middle-class mores marks its 50th birthday with a sumptuous 4K restoration and a limited cinematic release.

François and Simone Thévenot, Simone’s sister Florence and François’s colleague Rafael Acosta  arrive at the home of Henri and Alice Sénéchal one evening for dinner. Alice, though, tells the quartet that they’ve arrived on the wrong night – and so begins an apparently unending series of failed attempts by the group to sit down together to eat. Buñuel’s deliciously vicious satire has lost none of its power in the last half-century – and thanks to this glowing restoration, it’s never looked or sounded better.
