The Blue Caftan
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A man and woman couple work on pieces of fabric in their workshop/home filled with shelves of materials
The Blue Caftan, dir. Maryam Touzani, France / Morocco / Belgium 2022, 122 min., Arabic with English subtitles, 12A

Halim and Mina run a traditional caftan store in one of Morocco’s oldest medinas. The couple have lived a long time with Halim’s secret, his homosexuality, which he has learnt to keep quiet about. Mina’s illness and the arrival of a young apprentice will disturb this equilibrium. United in their love, each will help the other confront their fears.

The Blue Caftan weaves a complex and delicate story exploring rarely depicted shades of love. Second feature of Maryam Touzani (Adam), the film was awarded in Cannes with the FIPRESCI Prize.
