A Ay (Oh, Moon!), Dir. Reha Erdem, Türkiye 1988, 98 mins, Turkish with English subtitles
Book tickets
Originally released in 1988 and never shown in the UK before, A Ay (Oh, Moon!) is one of the most distinctive works of Turkish Cinema.
Eleven-year-old Yekta lives in a crumbling island mansion with her strict aunts and ailing grandfather, yearning for her absent mother. As dreams and surreal visions shape her solitude, she sets out in search of a mythical seagull with a child’s head.
A Ay loosely reimagines an historic Istanbul myth, weaving together symbolism and memory to present a portrait of a family home and the lingering haunt of its past inhabitants. Reha Erdem’s first feature is a poetic and captivating observation of Istanbul and its biggest island, Büyükada.
