Director and activist, Christian Ghazi (1934-2013) began his career making dozens of commissioned films in Lebanon, mostly centred on the struggles of resistance fighters, refugee camp dwellers, tobacco farmers, and factory workers. In 1988, the majority of his body of work was destroyed when militia fighters broke into his home and burned all his film negatives.

In collaboration with the ICA, Peer presents a public screening of One Hundred Faces for a Single Day (Mi'at Wajeh Li Yawm Wahed) (1972), Ghazi’s avant-garde experimental 16mm film, which critiques the behaviour of Beirut’s elites during Lebanon’s Golden Age, contrasting their apathy and comfort with the struggles of the working class. Made in 1969 and released in 1972, it is one of only two surviving early works by Ghazi. Presented as a jagged visual and sonic collage, the film is considered his “personal manifesto to cinema”.

The screening is preceded by Theatre in the Cross of the Wind (2011), Nancy el Hajj’s previously unseen documentary on Ghazi’s wider body of work and influence.

This event is presented as part of Dala Nasser’s Cemetery of Martyrs, a major new commission at Peer, produced in collaboration with Nottingham Contemporary and KM21 The Hague, Netherlands. Both films are distributed by Nadi LeKol Nas, Beirut.
