Maryam Tafakory: Rememberings
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Sparrow is Free, dir. Niki Kohandel, Iran 2021, 14 min.

In solidarity with the feminist revolution in Iran, this programmed curated by artist and filmmaker Maryam Tafakory brings together artists and films that explore personal and collective histories and memories – moving back and forth between past and present, between words, bodies, streets, geographies that we leave behind without ever leaving.

The elegiac Chooka weaves original material with elements of archival documentary footage and fragments of Iranian cinema to explore the entangled relationship between a stranger and a host, a factory and a village, a film crew and a family, foreign trees and a landscape.

Through a window into the life of the filmmaker Niki Kohandel's grandmother, short interview-film The Sparrow is Free explores gender roles in early 20th-century Iran, and Fatemeh Kazemi's Cotton Balls and Sweet Dreams gathers a selection of snapshots from family and personal life. Gelare Khoshgozaran's Men of my Dreams draws parallels from Los Angeles to the artists' childhood in Tehran, through a series of dreamlike vignettes. Nia Fekri's Mother's Apricot Compote presents a rumination on the experience of the immigrant within and without the diaspora.
