Two middle-aged brothers in the early years of family hood gather their young families together for what should be a warm and festive dinner on Christmas Eve, 1997 in Mexico City. From this simple premise filmmaker Racornelia unravels an incisive examination of the mechanisms of control and shifting power dynamics that underly domestic spaces.
Constructed as a home movie and drawing upon the influence of telenovelas, MACDO is a remarkable balancing act of emotions and forms, at turns venomous and tender, virtuosic and self-reflexive, that marks the arrival of a singular new voice in contemporary cinema.
The ICA is delighted to welcome Racornelia for an in-person Q&A following the UK Premiere of MACDO on Friday 6 March.
