“Bresson praised the grace of the film. But did he mean it or was he just taking the piss?” — Luc Moullet

Luc Moullet’s second feature, Les Contrebandières (1967) follows two women (Françoise Vatel and Monique Thiriet) working as smugglers in the the director’s native Southern French Alps, who discover they are both romantically involved with the same man (Johnny Monteilhet). In the hijinks that ensue, Moullet turns a spoof of adventure films into a nimble essay on consumerism, the French student movement, the Alpine landscape, and much else besides.

It is presented in this programme with Le Litre de lait (2006), an eccentric late short and one of Moullet’s favourites among his own works, which tells the autobiographical story of a teenage boy (Lucas Harari) who is sent to collect milk from the wife of the man with whom his mother is having an affair.
