Birdsong (El cant dels occels)
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Three kings consult in the middle of a black and white foggy desert
Birdsong (El cant dels occels), dir. Albert Serra, Spain 2008, 98 min., Catalan with English subtitles, 15

For his second film, Albert Serra took inspiration in a traditional Catalan Christmas song ‘El cant dels ocells’. The film accompanies the Three Wise Kings on a search for the newborn baby Jesus and their journey takes on epic proportions as they meander along the desert-like terrain with fortitude and stoicism.

Partly shot in the mountains of Iceland, partly in the interior of the Canary Islands, Birdsong is risky and adventurous in both visual and narrative terms. Breathtaking landscapes and an especially memorable underwater scene accompany Serra’s play with this sacred tale, invigorating the story with new life and meaning.
