ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
It’s 1993, and Selma (Zoé Adjani) is living with her Algerian family in a bourgeois Paris neighbourhood. She’s at an age – 17 – when desire and curiosity take over, though Selma soon comes to realise that in a patriarchal society, her attraction to classmate Julien (Louis Peres) is bound to clash against the strict rules set by her mother and father (Amira Casar and Lyes Salem). But can a fresh connection with her home country show her the way to becoming the master of her own desires?
Kamir Aïnouz’s directorial debut is a captivating coming-of-age drama – highlighted by an outstanding performance by Zoé Adjani as a young woman determined to find and follow her own path from adolescence to adulthood.
