ICA EXCLUSIVE I Am a Town
Institute of Contemporary Arts
I Am a Town, dir. Mischa Richter, USA 2020, 83 min., English

Photographer Mischa Richter is best known for taking the now-iconic portrait of Amy Winehouse that graces the cover of Back to Black. For his debut feature, Richter has turned his attention to his hometown – and paid it a beautiful, elegiac tribute in a film that screens exclusively at the ICA.

Back in 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers dropped anchor in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the very tip of Cape Cod. Their history resonates through this harbour town – but some four centuries on, Provincetown has carved its own character as a unique haven for artists, outsiders and the LGBTQ+ community. Richter, whose artist family has lived in the town for close to 100 years, meets pilgrims, outcasts, fishermen, drag queens, spirit guides and other singular P-Town characters – drawing a vivid, moving portrait of the meaning of freedom in contemporary America.
