Girls Can’t Surf
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Girls Can’t Surf, dir. Christopher Nelius, Australia 2020, 108 min., English, 12A

Christopher Neilus’s feature recounts the untold story of how a band of renegade female surfers in the 1980s fought to create their own professional sport – and changed surf culture around the world.

It’s the 1980s, and the world of professional surfing is a circus of fluoro colours, peroxide hair and out-of-control male egos. Fierce rivals on the board, a gang of upstart female surfers come together to push for equality and change against the male-dominated surfing establishment. Featuring surfing greats such as Lisa Andersen, Layne Beachley, Wendy Botha, Pam Burridge, Jodie Cooper, Pauline Menczer and Frieda Zamba, Girls Can’t Surf is a wild ride of clashing personalities, sexism, adventure and heartbreak, with each woman fighting against the odds to fulfil their dreams of competing professionally – and equally.
