Directors Pietro Marcello (Martin Eden), Francesco Munzi (Black Souls) and Alice Rohrwacher (Happy as Lazzaro) join forces to create this vital snapshot of life in modern-day Italy – as seen through the eyes of the teenagers who constitute the country’s future.
In February 2020, Marcello, Munzi and Rohrwacher set out to talk to the young people of Italy about how they see their future in their home country – if, indeed, they see a future there at all. A month later, the pandemic hit, only amplifying the uncertainties and fears of these young people – the youngest 15, the oldest 20 – as they consider what the coming years might bring. Paying proper respect to the views of a generation not always taken seriously by contemporary society and culture, Futura is a welcome and necessary counterweight to the complacency of adulthood.
