From the Planet of the Humans + Q&A
Institute of Contemporary Arts
From the Planet of the Humans (Dal pianeta degli umani), dir. Giovanni Cioni, Italy / Belgium / France 2021, 83 min., Italian with English subtitles

From the Planet of the Humans starts in the silence of the Ventimiglia border where thousands of migrants attempt to cross between Italy and France. The film reflects on the invisibility of their stories in this empty landscape, before focusing on the abandoned villa of Dr Serge Voronoff, a medical researcher whose ‘rejuvenation’ experiments had briefly made him a celebrity scientist in pre-war Europe.

The historical fate of this now-forgotten doctor, forced to flee France as a Russian-born Jew, links past disappearances to the continuing erasure of souls in the precarious present. Shifting between nature documentary and historical enquiry, between science fiction and political reflection, Giovanni Cioni asks what the purpose of evading death is if one does not know how to live and act – in the face of injustice and death – as a human being.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between the filmmaker Giovanni Cioni and EFF/BIMI director Michael Temple.
