Enys Men

A person in a wind jacket and jeans sits atop a mossy rock. The image is shot on grainy colour film.
Enys Men, dir. Mark Jenkin, United Kingdom 2022, 91 min., English, 15

A lone woman on an isolated island is caught between real life and living nightmare in this deeply original folk horror feature from Cornish director Mark Jenkin (The Midnight Drives, Bait).

It’s 1973, and an unnamed woman (Mary Woodvine) has taken up residence in an isolated cottage on an island off the Cornish coast. She’s apparently here to research the rare wildflowers that bloom here, but her observations take a dark turn into the strange and metaphysical – with thoughts and dreams of characters who pass by and through her mind like ships in the night. Shot by Jenkin around the disused tin mines of West Penwith, with grainy 16mm stock and post-synched sound, Enys Men is a powerfully singular film – and an ode of sorts to the uniquely strange beauty and character of this sparsely populated corner of England.
