“I just want to say that when it was released in 1987, it tanked. I’ve never seen worse reviews. It was just awful. Nobody was interested in it at all. My ideas were left of centre. They were left of everything. I’m afraid to look at it myself, to be reminded that what I did was so bizarre.”

- Diane Keaton, Interview Magazine, 2021.

Heaven is an avant-garde documentary that collages footage of people answering questions about Heaven, such as, what is Heaven? How doyu get to Heaven? Is there sex in Heaven? It intersperses these interviews with extraordinary assemblages of film footage depicting the after-life, taken from European and American film classics such as Metropolis (1927), Green Pastures (1936), and A Matter of Life and Death (1946). In a career spanning across the arts from the late 1960s to 2025, Heaven embodies Keaton’s idiosyncratic and ambitious approach to writing, photography, set design, title design, archiving, and art direction — left of everything, what remains is a quietly overlooked portrait of a true original.

This event will include a lecture by Eilis Searson, exploring modesty and mortality across Diane Keaton’s practice. All ticket holders will receive an original screen-print depicting Diane Keaton, after Andy Warhol, photographed by Tina Tyrell.
Eilis Searson is a Senior Lecturer at University of the Arts London and a Tutor at the Royal College of Art. Her screen-printed edition, Diane, After Andy (1984), By Tina and Eilis (2025), has been made with thanks to Tina Tyrell, Nicolas Raffin, G.F. Smith, and the printmaking team at London College of Communication.
