Shab-Nameh: Women of Iran’s Forgotten Left

These two research-based works draw on fragments from the archives of the final years of imperial Iran and the early post-revolutionary period. Weaving together textual traces, personal memory and cinematic imagination, Tafakory reveals what has been obscured by censorship and political repression. Rather than reconstructing the past, her poetic practice inhabits its silences, creating space for alternative histories and forgotten political imaginaries to emerge.

Shab-Nameh: Women of Iran’s Forgotten Left, dir. Maryam Tafakory, UK/Iran 2026, 41 min.
Following a screening of her short Ghazal-e Sorkh, Jarman Award–winning artist Maryam Tafakory presents this live film performance, which explores erased histories of women’s political resistance in Iran.

Ghazal-e Sorkh, dir. Maryam Tafakory, UK/Iran/France 2026, 20 min.
Built on extensive research into Iran’s political history in the 1970s, Ghazal-e-Sorkh is a layered cinematic poem that draws connections between historical events, hidden meanings and contemporary resonances, expressed through a distinctive interplay of musicality, rhythm and visual composition.

Total runtime: 61 min.
