Back and Forth dir. Michael Snow, Canada 1969, 16mm, 52 min

Back and Forth swaps Wavelength's slow zoom for a side-to-side pan that, like La Région Centrale, converts space into pure motion. As in Wavelength, the setting is an empty room (in this case a classroom) occasionally punctuated by human activity. Yet rather than acting as narrative gestures, these episodes serve to emphasise the film's particular rhythmic qualities, as Snow's camera builds towards a series of crescendos that complicate the relationship between viewer and image.

To Lavoisier, Who Died In The Reign of Terror dir. Michael Snow, Canada 1991, 16mm, 53 min

To Lavoisier employs Snow's trademark zooms and oblique angles, but also stands apart from the rest of his filmography. Its images are destablised not only by camera movements but also through blotches, scars and other blemishes on the film emulsion, the result of chemical processing by Snow's collaborator Carl Brown.

These transformations, analogous to those studied by father of modern chemistry Antoine Lavoisier and reminiscent at times of the work of Stan Brakhage, give rise to new ways of considering Snow's perennial themes of representation and abstraction.

Total runtime: 105 mins
