Colectivo Los Ingrávidos Programme 2: Shamanic Visions
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Tierra en Trance, 2022, 35mm, colour, sound, 38 min

Shamanic Visions, the second programme in a two-part series dedicated to the films of Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, combines experimental cinema with elements of indigenous Mexican spirituality. This programme, deeply interwoven with cultural and mystical elements, captures the collective's unique approach to filmmaking.

Tonalli (2021), is a visual and aural shamanic journey through ancient warfare, celestial rituals, and cosmic energy. The Winged Stone (2023) delves into the spiritual core of indigenous Mexican mythology, in a powerful visual narrative. El nido del Sol (2021), offers a contemplative view of the sun as a life-affirming force, merging natural imagery with spiritual symbolism reflecting indigenous beliefs and storytelling. The programme culminates with Tierra en Trance (2022), an extended exploration of trance states linked to the land. This film addresses themes of colonial impact and the enduring resilience of indigenous identity, providing a critical lens on historical and contemporary issues. Tierra en Trance will screen from a 35 mm print.

This programme is a testament to Colectivo Los Ingrávidos' commitment to redefining film language through the lens of indigenous culture and expression. It invites audiences to engage in an immersive journey through the spiritual and cultural landscapes of Mexico, offering a significant overview of the collective's artistic and philosophical ethos. Shamanic Visions is a platform for engaging with and understanding the complexities of indigenous Mexican identity and its manifestation in contemporary art and society.

Founded in 2012 in Tehuacán, Mexico, the Colectivo Los Ingrávidos draw inspiration from historical vanguards in order to dismantle commercial and corporate audiovisual grammar and the ideology it contains — calling, in so doing, for greater awareness and mass mobilisation. Combining digital and analogue media, interventions using archive materials, mythology, agitprop, social protests and documentary poetry, the Mexican collective conducts radical experiments that are, in themselves, political objects. Each of these manifests a desire to decolonise ways of seeing the world, from a Latin American perspective.
