Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Butch Bastard joins us for an evening of live music and cinema, one rich in counterculture mythologies, weathered landscapes and drifting americana. Featuring a live performance from Butch Bastard alongside a screening of Candy Mountain, the cult 1987 road movie by Robert Frank and Rudy Wurlitzer.
Pairing exquisite melodies with a fascination for misfits, dreamers and the absurd theatre of American life, Butch Bastard (the moniker of Seattle-born and L.A based musician Ian Murray) returns to the UK, after opening for Father John Misty on his 2025 EU/UK tour, for a unique live performance in the ICA Cinema.
Presented alongside a screening of Candy Mountain, the programme brings Murray’s music into dialogue with Robert Frank and Rudy Wurlitzer’s 1987 road movie, which follows a young musician in search of a legendary guitar maker, as he drifts through a fragmented landscape haunted by the fading afterimage of the counterculture and populated by musicians, hustlers and ghosts.

Butch Bastard is the moniker of Ian Murray (he/him), a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer crafting literate, emotionally resonant music. Originally hailing from Seattle and now based in Los Angeles, Murray’s work as Butch Bastard reflects a deep commitment to narrative songwriting, melodic sophistication, and a quietly defiant independence.
