a-ha: The Movie, dirs.Thomas Robsahm & Aslaug Holm, Norway / Germany 2021, 107 min., English, Norwegian and German with English subtitles, 12A

Formed exactly 40 years ago, Norwegian trio a-ha spent three years building up to their biggest success and the next 37 years trying to live up to it – or live it down. So what really happened next?

Norwegian filmmakers Thomas Robsahm and Aslaug Holm retell the group’s story from their early days in Oslo and London, via indelible worldwide hits such as ‘Take on Me’ and Bond theme ‘The Living Daylights’, and on to their 21st century career as the purveyors of melancholy stadium pop for a hugely dedicated fanbase – travelling in separate cars, staying apart backstage and meeting only on stage. Filmed over four years, this is a fascinating portrait of one of pop music’s most intriguing groups.
