In a beauty clinic in Beirut clients lie facing upwards in front of a wall painted deep blue as the salon’s owner Bouba administers facial fillers and botox, squeegeeing it roughly into place subdermally, and occasionally drawing blood, transforming frown lines and torpefying movement.

Filmed from a close and static perspective throughout, men and women of all ages and vocations chat with Bouba, and the conversation often thrums with the memory of war in the city and in the region, and discussions of war drawing nearer. In Omar Mismar’s grisly and fascinating film, memory and violence are revealed on the treatment table by a community avowing control of their bodies in a curious expression of resistance.
