The rock documentary and political manifesto Tranny Fag depicts the life of Brazilian musician and spoken word artist Linn da Quebrada, a self-proclaimed ‘tranny fag’, who uses her body and music as weapons to fight machismo, transphobia, racism and conformity.
Quebrada and performance partner Jup do Bairro speak candidly from their lived experience as queers of colour growing up in the favelas of São Paulo, and the challenges of breaking into the country’s heteronormative funk scene. The two musicians are shown on stage, conducting talk radio interviews and at home discussing topics of love, racism and poverty.
Focusing on her physical identification, Tranny Fag follows Quebrada’s time in hospital undergoing testicular cancer treatments, combining home videos, performance documentation and graphic explorations of her body, questioning definitions of what transvestites are and how gender normative roles can be reconsidered.
