In rural Lesotho, Mantoa (Mary Twala) eagerly awaits the return of her son, her only living relative, from his job in South Africa. When she hears of his death in a mining accident, the heartbroken 80-year-old widow makes arrangements for her own burial in the local cemetery – only for the government to announce that they plan to resettle everyone in the village to make way for the construction of a dam, leaving Mantoa to defend the land and the heritage of her close-knit community.
Partly inspired by the story of the director’s grandmother, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s melancholy modern fairytale has been acclaimed at festivals worldwide – and, in December, won four Africa Movie Academy Awards, including Best Director.
