This pre-recorded event centres around the book Institution as Praxis – New Curatorial Directions for Collaborative Research, which was edited by Prof. Carolina Rito and Dr. Bill Balaskas and published almost a year ago by Sternberg Press and Nottingham Contemporary. The publication explores the question: How are curatorial and artistic practices advancing new research methods? The speculative interface of cultural practices has radically changed the way we think of the development of research qualities in curatorial and artistic enquiries. Institution as Praxis aims to identify and advocate for a multiplicity of practices taking place across the cultural sector that do not only engage with the imperative to deliver, but generate new modes of knowledge production and research in the field of visual culture, art, and the curatorial.
In this discussion, Rito and Balaskas are joined by farid rakun from ruangrupa – the Jakarta-based artists’ collective, who have exhibited and curated internationally, and who are the curators of next year’s documenta 15; and Pujita Guha and Abhijan Toto – the co-directors of The Forrest Curriculum, which is an itinerant and nomadic platform for mutual co-learning and ‘indisciplinary’ research.
Farid Rakun trained as an architect (B.Arch from Universitas Indonesia and M.Arch from Cranbrook Academy of Art). farid rakun wears different hats, dependent on who is asking. A visiting lecturer in the Architecture Department of Universitas Indonesia, he is also a part of the artists’ collective ruangrupa, with whom he co-curated TRANSaction: Sonsbeek 2016 in Arnhem, NL and currently acting as the collective artistic director for documenta 15 (Kassel, 2022). https://ruangrupa.id/
The Forest Curriculum (Bangkok / Yogyakarta / Manila / Seoul / Berlin / Santa Barbara) is an itinerant and nomadic platform for interdisciplinary research and mutual co-learning, based in Southeast Asia, and operating internationally. Founded and co-directed by curators Abhijan Toto and Pujita Guha, and with Rosalia Namsai Engchuan, it works with artists, collectives, researchers, indigenous organizations and thinkers, musicians, and activists to assemble a located critique of the Anthropocene via the naturecultures of Zomia, the forested belt that connects South and Southeast Asia. http://theforestcurriculum.com/
Carolina Rito is Professor of Creative Practice Research, at the Research Centre for Arts, Memory and Communities (CAMC), Coventry University; and leads on the centre’s Critical Practices research strand. Rito is the co-editor of Institution as Praxis – New Curatorial Directions for Collaborative Research (Sternberg, 2020), Architectures of Education (e-flux Architecture, 2020), and FABRICATING PUBLICS: the dissemination of culture in the post-truth era (Open Humanities Press, forthcoming). Bill Balaskas is an artist, theorist, and educator, whose research is located at the intersection of politics, digital media, and contemporary visual culture. He is an Associate Professor and Director of Research, Business and Innovation at the School of Art and Architecture of Kingston University, London. His work has been widely exhibited in the UK and internationally. He has received awards and grants from the European Investment Bank Institute; Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art (CIHA); Open Society Foundations; European Cultural Foundation; the Australian National University; and the Association for Art History (UK), amongst others. https://www.billbalaskas.com/
