Where Theory Belongs: Ayesha Hameed

Where Theory Belongs is a series of ten lectures programmed and chaired by Dr. Stephen Wilson as part of CCW’s General Theory Forum, which places the excitement of theory back into the hands of the speaker and the audience. In an increasingly resistant culture of auto‐regulated art-speak, art theory is in a constant need for reflective governance. This series will offer a platform that brings together art theorists, anthropologists, sociologists, humanists, queer theorists, artists and political economists… theory will be addressed by those voices that write and speak it, thereby suggesting Where Theory Belongs.

In this session, titled Black Atlantis, Dr. Ayesha Hameed, lecturer at Goldsmiths College, University of London, will be in conversation with Dr. Maria Walsh, Senior Lecturer at Chelsea College of Arts.

Dr. Ayesha Hameed is a writer and artist who explores historical and contemporary borders and migration in her research. She is currently completing a monograph entitled Walter Benjamin and the Black Atlantis. A second project, A Rough History (of the destruction of fingerprints) was exhibited as part of the Forensic Architecture group exhibition in the House of World Cultures (Berlin) in 2014.

Her recent publications include contributions to Forensis:The Architecture of Public Truth (2014), The Sarai Reader (2013), Savage Objects: Inhuman Political Alliances (2012), TateETC (2010) and Photoworks (2011). She has presented her research at the University of Chicago, Cambridge University, the United Nations Human Rights Commission, the European Capital of Culture in Guimarães and the Städelschule. She has received competitive fellowships and grants from institutions such as Cornell University, the Banff Centre for the Arts, Concordia University, Canada Council for the Arts and FRQSC. She is Lecturer in Visual Cultures and Joint Programme Leader in Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths University, London.

Dr. Maria Walsh is a Senior Lecturer in Art History and Theory at Chelsea College of Arts. She is BA Fine Art Theory Coordinator and co-convenor of the Subjectivity & Feminisms research group. Walsh studied Painting at the Crawford College of Art & Design in Cork, Ireland before moving to London to complete an MA in Art Theory at Chelsea, followed by an MA in Psychoanalytic Studies at Brunel University.

Outtakes from her doctoral work on Tacita Dean, Chantal Akerman and nomadic subjectivity have been published in peer-reviewed journals including Screen, Angelaki: Journal of the Theoretical Humanities, and Rhizomes. She has contributed chapters to a number of books on the topic of film spectatorship, affect and embodiment, including Screen/Space: The Projected Image in Contemporary Art, MUP: 2011. I.B. Tauris published her monograph, Art and Psychoanalysis, in 2012. She is a regular contributor to Art Monthly and is a member of the Peer Review College.
