Driven career woman Ines generally shuns her prankster father Winfried, whose main companion is his old dog. But when the dog dies, Winfried spontaneously decides to bond with Ines during a business conference in Bucharest – a gesture that appalls her. Unwilling to be cowed, Winfried adopts the wild-man alter ego of Toni Erdmann, thus obliging Ines to protect her steely image amid the executives she’s trying to impress. Cue numerous increasingly bizarre and hilarious set pieces, which ultimately, if paradoxically, bring father and daughter closer together.
Best known as a producer—especially of the much-lauded Arabian Nights trilogy—writer-director Maren Ade delivers a distinctly offbeat comedy, the deserving winner of multiple awards including the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes 2016.
Toni Erdmann, dir. Maren Ade, Germany/Austria 2016, 162 mins, German with English subtitles.
