A Tokyo salaryman who suddenly loses his job in the economic crisis decides to keep his unemployment a secret from his family – maintaining the illusion that he goes to work every day. As doubt, guilt and denial begin to take hold, his wife becomes suspicious and his sons rebellious. A glimmer of redemption comes from the youngest son’s covert piano lessons in the memorable final sequence.
A rare film filled with compassion and humanity from Kiyoshi Kurosawa, widely regarded as a master of Japanese horror (Creepy), and winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes 2008.
