Terracotta Far East Film Festival: Spotlight ON: The Philippines

23 May 201427 May 2014

In the past few years, the Philippines has seen a rapid boom in its cinema industry; 2013 was considered locally one of the best years in terms of film quality.

Perhaps the most recognisable name in the 2013 crop of Filipino films is Erik Matti, whose most recent film, On The Job, received a standing ovation at the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes in 2013. But many more Pinoy films have yet to be given the opportunity to showcase on the international the festival circuit.

This selection shines a light on some of the most entertaining and accessible output from the burgeoning film sector in the Philippines. It has been curated to try and represent a range of different genres, from indie films to more commercial output, and including one of the most experimental young directors working in the Philippines today. The programme is brought to a close with a unique documentary about a two-foot-nine Filipino 'James Bond' and the history of the Filipino B-films industry from the mid-1970s onwards.

By offering you just a teaser, the festival hopes to inspire you to delve further into the wonders of the rich cinema of the Philippines.
