The first part of the Apu trilogy was also the debut film of former graphic artist Ray. One of the classic films about childhood and family, the film sees the world through Apu's eyes as he begins to yearn for a world beyond the limits of his impoverished village home. Shot through with moments of wonder, most notably Apu's steam-train sighting.
