In this tender coming-of-age story with a twist, a young girl named Laure moves to a new neighbourhood in the suburbs of Paris with her kid sister, but soon finds herself struggling to fit in. Desperate for friends, Laure decides to start dressing like a boy, cutting her hair and completely transforming her wardrobe. It’s a trick that pays off, but with her new pal Lisa unaware of Laure’s true identity, it’s only a matter of time before things become complicated. This is a spirited and life-affirming alt drama from the director of Girlhood (2014).
Tomboy, dir. Céline Sciamma, France 2011, 82 mins., French with English subtitles.
