Trapped in anti-gypsy prejudice and her own community’s entrenched behavior, Žaneta is determined to live ‘a normal life’ with her unemployed partner David, their daughter and Žaneta´s teenage sister. Desperate to get a regular job, she battles welfare officers and prospective employers refusing to turn to crime.

The first Czech film screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 16 years, this is a complex picture of a strong modern-day heroine facing the daily struggle to survive and better her life against the odds.

This screening will be followed by a discussion on social exclusion in contemporary society with the film director Petr Václav, Alan Anstead and David Chirico.

Alan Anstead is an anti-racism activist and communications professional. He runs two charities: Equality, which works with Roma families that live in the UK, and the UK Race and Europe Network, which is a membership body of 160 race equality organisations across the UK that see the relevance of Europe to their work. Alan also teaches at Greenwich University and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ qualifications. He formerly worked for the European Roma Rights Centre in Budapest and the British government.

David Chirico specializes in immigration and asylum law representing vulnerable clients. Alongside his work in (and on appeal from) the Tribunals, he has a large and varied judicial review practice. He previously worked in the Czech Republic for the European Roma Rights Center, as a caseworker and helping in the preparation of strategic litigation on discrimination in the criminal justice system, access to education, and access to housing. On return to the UK, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Central European Studies at University College, London, and was regularly called upon to act as an expert on the situation of Czech and Slovak Roma at all levels of the immigration appellate system in the UK.
