Blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality, heroism and stupidity, past and present, Velvet Terrorists portrays three men who took up arms against communism and were jailed for it; Stano failed to blow up an official party gathering; Fero tried to contact the CIA before attempting to assassinate the president; and Vladimír blew up Communist billboards.
Re-enacting their heroic acts while struggling with their mundane, unhappy lives brings a lot of tongue-in-cheek humour to these visually impressive and tragicomic tales.
Velvet Terrorists, dirs. Peter Kerekeš, Pavol Pekarčík, Ivan Ostrochovský, SK/CZ/Croatia 2013, 87 min. English subtitles
