LSFF: Special Event: Nature Mixtape - Mary Field & Jessica Sarah Rinland

13 Jan 2016

LSFF is excited to present a programme of work by the little-known, pioneering British documentarian Mary Field (1896-1968) on 16mm and 35mm print. Field's films explore British wildlife with humanising narratives, providing a unique insight into the anthropology and culture of mid-twentieth century Britain.

Inspired by Field’s visceral, often comic depictions of wildlife, we have commissioned artist filmmaker Jessica Sarah Rinland to create a new film in response to Field's legacy of work. Rinland's film, shot on location in the diverse natural habits of Argentina, will use detailed voice-over descriptions. The piece will play with notions of sense perception and the subjectivity of the viewing experience.

The programme will comprise of approximately 100 mins of Mary Field’s work, screened on original prints, plus Jessica’s new commission and a post screening discussion about Field’s legacy of work.

With thanks to Kate Gerova and Niki Chang for their support in developing the original ideas for the programme. Programme co-curated by Jo Duncombe and Jessica Sarah Rinland.
