This epic drama from Robert Altman is inspired by nine short stories and a poem by Raymond Carver. With an all-star cast including Julianne Moore, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Waits, the film traces the actions of 22 principal characters in contemporary Los Angeles, both in parallel and with occasional connections.
The role of chance and luck is central to the film, and many of the stories concern death and infidelity. The script by Altman and his regular collaborator Frank Barhydt is a masterclass in adaptation, drawing on multiple stories and characters into a single piece.
